Staying Healthy While Pregnant

Now that you have a baby in your belly, being healthy has taken on a whole new meaning. You're no longer simply looking after yourself; you've got a little one inside you to consider! Pregnancy can be a wonderful yet confusing time – there is so much information available it can be difficult to know when you're making the right decision. You will get advice from family members and friends about what you should and should not do while pregnant, but absolutely it's up to you – it's your baby afterall! It's important to be informed about your health as a mother to be and to keep you and baby as healthy as possible. Here are some pregnancy health tips to consider:

Diet recommendations

Being pregnant may not be a license to over indulge on your favorite treasures, but you will need to consume more calories to keep up with the demands of your body. It's important to fuel your body with plenty of nutrients and most importantly discuss your diet with your doctor. They may recommend some restrictions (such as avoiding certain seafoods) and more careful food handling practices (avoiding pre-made salads). To give your body the nutrients it needs, keep these foods at the top of your list:

  • Fruit and vegetables (green leafy variety) prepared at home and rinsed well
  • Low-fat dairy, pasteurized milk
  • Lean meats in moderate amounts
  • Wholegrain breads and cereals
  • Ensure that any fish you consume is low in mercury, you may need to consult your doctor for individual advice
  • Lentils, nuts and beans

Vitamin B9, also known as folate or folic acid is a B-group vitamin found in a variety of foods. A mother to be will need to consume higher levels of folate during pregnancy so aim to incorporate at least 600mcg (micrograms) of it into your diet. Foods containing folic acid include; Vegemite, herbs like spearmint, rosemary and coriander, soy beans, leafy vegetables like spinach, peanuts, asparagus, oranges, broccoli, avocado and kiwi fruit.

Foods to avoid

One of the downfalls of being pregnant is learning what all the high risk foods are, and then avoiding them for the duration of your pregnancy. The number one rule to follow is avoid anything raw, like meat and eggs (think again before taste-testing the cake batter!)

  • Unpasteurised milk
  • Processed meats, raw or undercooked meat
  • Raw seafood such as sushi, prawns or oysters, if you do eat seafood ensure that it has been properly cooked
  • Anything that high in fat, sugar and salt (check all labeling) should be taken in small amounts

It's important to understand that crash diets can seriously compromise the heath of your child. You will put on weight as your belly grows and this is perfectly normal and healthy.

Vitamin supplements

Pregnancy creates higher demands for nutrients to ensure the growth of your baby. If you are struggling to get all the required nutrients into your diet, your health care provider may suggest vitamin supplements. There are prenatal as well as postnatal supplements on the market to help with things like conceiving, morning sickness, breastfeeding feeding and nutrients support.

Common health conditions during pregnancy

Problems during pregnancy are common, even in healthy women. Some are not serious but it's important to always be on top of things by consulting your doctor if you are worried. Here are some common health issues:

  • Anemia – being iron deficient during pregnancy can easily be remedied with iron supplements
  • Depression or intense, long periods of sadness – hormones can affect your mood, talk about what you're feeling or join a support group for mothers
  • Gestational diabetes – Follow a health plan as outlined by your doctor or nutritionist
  • High blood pressure
  • Infections, influenza

Reiki Helps Women With Fertility Problems Achieve Their Pregnancy Goals

Reiki, a Japanese energy modality, may seem difficult for the logical mind to understand, but that is because in the western world we tend to comprehend only what we can see. When we look at the human body we see the biological aspects of bones, skin, hair, etc., as well as the chemical components of blood and hormones.

Researchers have proven that we also embody an energy component. Energy exists within each cell and between each cell – our substance matter. This energy when blocked or eliminated, can cause many physical issues in the body to include fertility problems.

In many areas of the world, medical treatments or health and wellness models include the integration of some type of energy medicine to treat the whole body. When one's energy is out of balance, the body is affected in some way. Over time, an energy imbalance will manifest as some type of symptom or dis-ease in the body.

The longer a practitioner works with an energy modality, the more sensitive he or she becomes to what is or is not happening in a client's energy field. After writing an article on Reiki and fertility issues, I received a phone call from Karen * explaining the challenges she is facing with fertility and how the medical community is advising her to adopt or receive a donor egg. Something in her voice tells me that she knows she can become pregnant. We then discuss what Reiki can do to support her body, mind, and emotions, whether she is trying to get pregnant on her own or go through the in vitro fertilization process.

Our life history impacts and creates the energy dynamics that are occurring in our body. Positive behaviors like good eating habits, exercising, and increasing healthy self-esteem feed a positive energy flow in the body. Constant stress, lack of exercise, substance abuse and harboring a negative or fearful belief system cause barriers in the energy field that diminish flow to different areas of the body. The energy field may also be damaged from broken bones, falls, past surgeries, major illnesses, or long-term emotional or mental stress.

An energy practitioner must first assess what is or is not occurring in the client's entire energy field and then work toward repairing and restoring it. What we need to understand when seeking any energy modality for healing is that it took years or even decades to create the energy dynamic that is occurring in our body to support or obstruct our health and pregnancy goals. Restoring wellness using Reiki is a process.

During my first session with Karen, I explored where her energy was blocked or out of balance and began to restore her energy field. I noticed that the energy around her reproductive system was very low. The left ovary energy seemed too hot, and it felt as if the energy was isolated or not connected with the rest of the reproductive system. I observed that her field on the left in those areas was leaking energy so I started working to seal the energy leaks and saturate her field with Reiki. I also felt that her sinuses on the right side were troubling her.

All parts of our body serve a role in keeping us healthy. Our energy, when at its optimum, supports total health and well being. It provides the fuel for all of our body systems and organs to work at full capacity. Without a full tank we may feel as if we are struggling on various levels; our body might not be able to perfectly perform in the way that the various components were meant to and our emotional or mental states may experience depression or feel overwhelmed.

Unlike the medical arena where doctors note measurements of hormone levels, follicle development, anatomical abnormalities and other patterns during the work-up of infertility, Reiki can not label specific impairments in a woman's energy field because each person's energy dynamic is different. The common thread is that each woman's energy is diminished in some way, but the reason for the low energy levels is differs for each one.

After finishing the energy field assessment, I then used Reiki to bring Karen's energetic body back into balance. It may take several sessions to restore a body's energy and to repaired broken and depleted energy lines (chakras, meridians, nadis, hara line) that send the energy into different parts of the body. Fortunately, Reiki can energetically connect people at a distance and achieve the same amazing results if they are apart or physically together in the same space.

Reiki can be used through a woman's cycle to support the growth of follicles and recruitment of healthy eggs, the fertilization of eggs and assisting the embryo to implant in the uterine lining. Reiki also provides emotional and mental balance helping the client to align with the process of fertility in a more positive way. It is very discouraging for a woman to be told by the medical community that she should give up when she is feeling empowered to manifest a family. The negativity permeates into her emotional and energetic fields, creating more blocks. Reiki supports her into a place of knowing that all will work out for the best and that all parts of her being working towards creating the highest good for all. We are powerful manifestors, especially where our hearts stay. Energy follows thought and is empowered by our feelings.

It is important for women with fertility issues to know that the process of receiving Reiki to restore the energy field should begin as soon as possible when you are considering conception by any means. This gives a woman's energy field time to be cleared, repaired and strengthened for your new cycle to begin. Reiki also helps with the lack of energy that a woman feels in the first and third trimesters of pregnancy, as well as providing excellent labor and delivery support.

A physician client who successfully used Reiki to become pregnant noted that although there are no scientific studies on Reiki in the treatment of fertility, infertility is a medical crisis for a couple, affecting every aspect of their lives and wellbeing. Taking exceptional care of each other and the relationship during this time is mandatory.

Diversifying your healing team, including yourself as a committed member, will make all the difference in how quickly you can achieve your goals. The Reiki that clients receive during this process not only supports the reproduction process but also helps to bring balance and peace in mind, body and life.

Would You Like To Know The Best Fitness Programs for Stay at Home Moms?

For the past 9 years I've had the very unique experience of working with women to build strong health & wellness programs for moms. Especially those that just recently had a baby and want to get their pre-baby body back. I discovered what makes this group so special and how to help them achieve their goals.

Many moms are transforming their bodies and getting in better shape than ever, while being the prime example of good health and fitness to their children.

On the flip side we all know that if we leave our bodies alone and do nothing, time will take its toll on us, and usually gain so much weight that we may give up.

I remember one day, a doctor, friend or relative drops a comment … or they see a photo on Facebook, and that's when it suddenly becomes real:

All of a sudden, they're not just “out of shape” … their “ideal weight” seems practically on the other side of the scale – and they feel like they're on a slippery slope with no idea how it started … or how to stop it.

What's WORSE, even people who fight their hardest to change course and get their old body back end up trying and failing with so many fad diets, “extreme” workouts and shady supplements …

… they end up feeling like they're not only overweight, but LAZY, too – because suddenly they're just a statistic.

One of the 2 out of 3 obese Canadians … one of the 67% of people who sign up for a gym membership and never use it … who just does not have the “willpower” to get thin.

But not everyone fails …

And for 99% of those who do succeed, the difference has nothing to do with genetics, how much time they spend in the gym, or how much they “want it.”

I love to change things up, so I will also train outside when I can!

I woke up this morning and I am feeling the last two AWESOME days of training. It's also my first two days on a new program, so that should not surprise me.

Our muscles always get sore when we start a new program. Over time, our body adapts, and we experience less soreness from the same training.

This workout is called the, “Do It Outside in the Backyard in the Sun Loving Every Minute Of It” (because I did it Friday on the farm – great times!):

– Kettlebell front squats (loving the “honesty” of this exercise)
– KB 1-arm Overhead press
– KB swing

– Pullup
– Pushup challenge
– Long Jump

– TRX row
TRX fallout
– TRX 1-leg Squat

Enjoy the post-training bliss.

By the way, someone asked me this on FB yesterday:

“How do you target the quads?”

Answer:

This is not a training mindset I think many people should have. “Targeting muscles” is a bodybuilder approach, and I do not train that way.

That said, some great multi-muscle exercises would be:

Front squats, forward lunges, close-back back squats, step-ups. All must be done with intention and focus to contract the muscle.

Why are my Circuit Training the Best Workouts Ever?

Because they …
• Increase your post-exercise calorie burn for up to 40 hours
• Activate a special fat-burning SUPER-HORMONE for super-fast fat loss
• Build muscle and burn fat at the same time <= Holy Grail of Fitness
• And will help women fit back in their skinny jeans
• Require only three sessions per week
• Will allow you to NEVER have to do cardio again
• Take less than 30 minutes to do (from warm-up to your last rep)
• Allow you to train with me for every exercise, set, & rep

So you would start out with Level 1 – moves like “One-leg shin taps” … “Shoulder bridge lifts” … “body rows” … and “Turkish Arm Bars.”

These are movements I've selected because anyone can do them with proper form right away. That means no injuries, frustration, or struggling to keep up.

Once you reach the tenth and final routine in level one … and check your progress with the charting to see if it gives you a clear indication for you to move on to the next level!

Once you get the “green light” to skip ahead to Level 2, your routines step things up a notch to get you even closer to your dream body … with movements like “Burpee Walk Outs,” “Turkish Sit-Ups,” ” and “Single-Unders” …

And by the time you've blazed through Level 2 – on through Levels 3 … 4 … and even 5 … through envelope-pushing challenges like “Kipping Pull-ups,” “Grasshoppers,” “Vertical Pike Presses , “” Inchworms, “and” Goblet Jump Squats “…

Well, you've reached a level of performance, strength, and yes – a completely re-shaped and transformed new body – the kind of personal best you could never touch through “random” fad workouts and marathon cardio dashes.

All without strain or struggle, and no need for a trainer, a gym membership or any pills or powders, and we always make sure our clients engage in proper personal training & Fat loss programs in order for them to change their life and to Live better ! … Thank you.

What Are the Benefits of Wearing a Bra to Sleep

One of the more common questions that women ask about sleeping is if it is a good idea to sleep in a bra at night or not. When you really stop to examine some of the facts about sleeping in a bra, you will find that there are advantages as well as some possible disadvantages in doing so. In this article, we are going to cover both but we're going to try to focus on the positive aspects of sleeping in a bra, as it may be something that you choose to do.

The first thing that I would like to say is that there are some myths about wearing a bra at night which need to be dispelled immediately. One of the more common of those myths is that wearing a bra while you are sleeping can lead to an increased risk for breast cancer. This is absolutely not true. There are no studies or evidence to support that statement and women have been sleeping in their bras for many years without ever developing any problems with breast cancer. There are so many other contributing factors to breast cancer that need to be avoided but wearing a bra at night is not one of them. That is why I would suggest, if you enjoy wearing a bra at night and find it to be comfortable, go right ahead and do so.

There are specific benefits to wearing a bra while you are sleeping that should also be considered. If you are large breasted, wearing a bra while you sleep will help you to avoid any premature sagging of the breasts. It is also beneficial for women who have recently undergone breast surgery. It will help to support the breasts and to keep them from getting sore due to the surgery that was recently done.

If you are going to wear a bra at night, it is important for you to choose one that is comfortable. If you tend to wear an underwire bra during the day, it is best if you choose a bra that does not have that underwire for sleeping at night. Although you may find it to be perfectly fine in doing so, some women have a problem with a bra digging into them and creating discomfort while they sleep. It may not wake them enough to bring them entirely conscious but it may disrupt their sleep enough that they are tired the next day.

Finally, choose a bra that is not too tight, and you may actually want to choose one that is slightly loose for sleeping. The lymph fluid drains in the breasts during the night and if you wear a bra that is too tight, it is going to disrupt this process. They can also make you uncomfortable, which is surely something that you would want to avoid while you were sleeping. So the bottom line is, if you enjoy wearing a bra at night and it makes you feel comfortable, go right ahead and do so.

Getting the advice of a doctor will not only guarantee that you will be healthy and safe but will make the abortion process successful. These drugs can sometimes be dangerous if taken without the advice of a medical professional.

Are all abortion drugs safe to take?

Generally all FDA-approved drugs are tested and proven to be safe. Taking abortion pills with the supervision of a physician is safe. However you should check the drug for its expiration date. You should be able to purchase or acquire these drugs from legitimate drugstores. You could experience serious problems if you happen to take fake or expired abortion drugs. Also some of these drugs may not be suitable for you, that is why you need to get a prescription first from your doctor.

Are these drugs effective?

If you happen to be pregnant for a maximum of 9 weeks then the drug could be successful in your abortion. However, you should consult your doctor first before administering any type of abortifacient medication. Your physicist should first assess your condition and recommend the right type you should take. These conditions should include history of allergies, anemia, and high blood pressure. High-risk pregnancies such as ectopic pregnancy must cause concern as they may produce undesirable complications.

Although these drugs are effective, there is still a chance that the drug might not be successful in ending your pregnancy. These signs may include less bleeding and continuing fetal movement in the pelvic area. If these signs happen or if the pregnancy has past the first trimester, then doctors would recommend a surgical abortion procedure instead of manually removing the fetus from the female organ.

Naturally these drugs can cause minor side effects like bleeding and conttrcations. However the side effects could vary depending on the person's health. For instance, mifepristone side effects can be experience by some women while others may not. How to Know If You’re Qualified for Medical Abortion

Abortion is now legal in the United States. There are several reasons why some women undergo medical abortion procedures. Oftentimes the reason could be economic, as those women may be financially incapacitated of supporting a child. Other reasons could be health issues and emotional issues. Whatever reason you may have, you should be ready to undergo this tender procedure. Ideally, before going to a clinic, you should assess yourself if you are qualified to undergo a medical abortion procedure.

Your Last Menstruation Should Be 9 Weeks or Earlier

One requirement for eligibility for medical abortion is that you have to be 9 weeks pregnant. Doctors will advise you to take abortion pills if you are still pregnant for 9 weeks or earlier, as approved by the FDA. Taking an abortion pill is safer compared to any other legal method. But if you decide to have an abortion after 9 weeks then it would be best to discuss with your physician about the safest methods of surgical abortion procedures that he or she can recommend to you.

You Must Be Emotionally Prepared

Another identifying factor if you're qualified to undergo an abortion procedure is to be physically and emotionally prepared. You should be sure about your decision and must not have second thoughts to proceed with the abortion. If you are still hesitant then it's advisable to consult first your abortion physician about it. Ideally you should be emotionally stable to submit yourself for the procedures. Never understimate the psychological and emotional complications that may occur if the abortion procedure was not done properly, or you experience bouts of depression prior to the procedure.

You Are Ready to Do Follow-Up Medical Check-Ups

An abortion procedure requires at least two follow-up medical check-ups. This could be more dependent on the advice of your physician. These check-ups are important so that the doctor can monitor the success of the procedure. The doctor will also check on you if the abortion pill you took was effective and if you encountered any side effects. You should return to the clinic after the procedure and submit yourself for a physical examination. This is one way of ensuring that you are still healthy even after undergoing the abortion procedure.

Being qualified to undergo this tender procedure is important to ensure your health and safety. Most of all you should be physically and psychologically fit to go through with this procedure.

Infertility in Women and Its Treatment

Infertility means accessibility to get pregnant. If a woman is unable to conceive even after a minimum one year of unprotected intercourse, it is termed as Primary Infertility. Several females get pregnant but suffer from repeated miscarriages. This is known as Secondary Infertility. One out of ten women in the world sufferers from infertility. It is important to know that if you are having a problem in getting pregnant or are suffering from repeated miscarriages, you are not alone. The good news is that infertility in most cases is treatable.

Infertility treatment depends on many factors such as the type of infertility (including the pinpointing of the exact cause), age of the couple and the time for which the condition has exhausted. Several issues personal to the couple undergoing the treatment also affect the process adopted for the cure. In some cases, it is not possible to treat infertility by medication and therapy alone. Such women can still conceive with the help of assisted reproductive methods, IVF (in vitro fertilization) being one of them. Most importantly, infertility treatment involves physical and psychological commitment and the will to bear with relatively expensive medical procedures.

Infertility Treatment for women : Infertility can be cured by undergoing one of the following therapies. At times the patient is required to undergo more than one therapy to treat the condition:

Stimulating ovulation : Medicines to regulate or inducing ovulation are given to assist in fertility. Clomifen, Metformin, Tamoxifen are some of the drugs which are used to stimulate ovaries in women with infertility.

Intrauterine insemination: This process involves collection, concentration and placement of healthy sperms directly into the uterus. This process is done during ovulation. The timing of this treatment is coordinated with the normal menstrual period or with fertility drugs. IUI is used in the following conditions:

· Unexplained fertility

· Man has low sperm count / low sperm motility

· Man is impotent or premature ejaculation

· Woman has mild endometriosis

Surgery: Surgery as an intervention for treating infertility is used when a woman is diagnosed with conditions like endometriosis (a condition when parts of womb lining begin to grow outside the womb), PCODs, fallopian tube blockage or scars.

Assisted Reproductive Technology: Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) offers the highest chance of getting pregnant for most couples. Physicians, embryologists, psychologists, lab technicians, nurses and associated medical professionals work together to help couples achieve pregnancy through this method. The most common ART technique is in vitro fertilization. In this technique, ovaries are stimulated to produce multiple eggs which are then collected and fertilized with sperms in a lab. The fertilized embryos are implanted in the uterus of woman within three to five days. In US alone, thousands of babies are born every year with the help of Assisted Reproductive Technology. The success of this technique gets lower after a woman reaches 35 years of age.

There are different methods which can be used during IVF such as:

Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection: This technique is often used when semen quality is a problem and there are only a few sperms or if fertilization attempts during IVF fails. In this technique, a single healthy sperm is injected directly into a mature egg.

Assisted hatching: This technique offers new hope for patients who have experienced repeated ART failures or are running out of their age. In this procedure, the outer covering of the embryo is opened during its implantation in the uterus.

Donors: Egg donors or sperm donors are used when there is a problem with either the sperms or eggs. In this technique, couples can choose sperm or eggs from a known or unknown person.

Gestational carrier: Women who are not fit to conceive or for conceiving can create a serious health problem may choose a gestational carrier. In this case, embryo is placed in the uterus of the carrier who carries and delivers child on behalf of other couple or person.

Tips on Spine Care During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, women have to be extra careful because changes in their body can be the cause of pain and discomfort in the next several months. Back pain, among other things, is quite common since women can no longer do all the things they used to when they were not carrying a growing fetus. There are a number of lifestyle changes you have to temporarily make to stay healthy and protect your spine during your pregnancy.

Basic Rules

• Put a pillow under your lower back when lying supine or a pillow between the knees when sleeping on one side.

• Gentle massage and deep breathing exercises will also maintain a healthy and strong spine.

Proper Posture

• Do not slouch or lean forward. Keep your back against the backrest while located.

• The knees should be slightly bent at a natural and comfortable angle.

• Even while sleeping, change sides every now and then. Use the right size and shape when it comes to pillows.

The Right Accessories

• Make use of supportive straps, bands and devices. Maternity pants and back supports are ideal for women who have scoliosis or who are at risk of having other back-related problems.

• Wear comfortable clothes and the supporting shoes.
