Is It OK to Exercise While Breastfeeding?

The common topics women share at a kitty party or post a gym session mostly are related to pregnancy, pregnancy, labor stories, feeding patterns etc. Being a senior mother of 3 child births, I am usually the center point for many questions related to these topics. One such question in the post gym session was, “Is it OK to exercise while breastfeeding?” If we have a rational thought process with a reality check, we have more than half of the answers in front of us. If we have to understand about the merits and demerits of exercising, let us think rationally !!

For this, we need to think how nature has incorporated a woman's life post childbirth? After a brief initial rest if you deliver normally, doctors make you walk around. Once you are home, you have the additional responsibility at home towards the newborn child and the possibility is higher that you move around. The extra activity may be implicitly termed as an exercise but may be a little unsystematic one. This makes us understand the basics that women can exercise post childbirth or while breastfeeding to that matter.

Infact, the exercise adds to your health and works positively for breastfeeding feeding women. You may be surprised to know that even rigorous workouts keep the volumes of milk produced in your body unaffected. There is a social stigma that the baby will reject your milk if you exercise while breastfeeding and it is absolutely incorrect. You can even breastfeed the baby shortly after an exercise session. However, this may be different in a cesarean section case as they are not allowed to exercise immediately post childbirth and the duration is little longer.

There is an article in 1992 after a study that mother's milk is found to have lactic acid in higher proportions immediately after an exercise and babies turn repellent as the milk is not as tasty as it used to be. These studies based on the 1992 findings are now highly in debt as the current researchers are skeptical with them for multiple reasons. As the babies were fed milk using a dropper although they are not habituated to drink milk this way, the studies are not being considered.

Let us keep the findings apart as the debt is still on. As long as the baby sees satisfied with your milk, you can absolutely go ahead and nurse them after an exercise session. However, you may feel more comfortable to nurse before you exercise as you have a sense of relieving after you feed and exercising with milk on may be little heavy. But if you can carry a workout session before feeding a baby as long as your baby is happy with the milk, go ahead and have a supportive bra to get into the exercise routine.

If you wave birth through a cesarean section, your healthcare provider would be able to recommend the right workout regime for you as it may not be correct for you to get into the normal routine. Be wary while making a decision and it is your health which is important than staying fit.

Infertility Is Nothing to Be Ashamed About

Not being able to have children has gained a negative stigma in the past. So much that couples were afraid to speak about it because they felt ashamed. Centuries ago the woman was blamed for the inability to have children and it was not understood that infertility could come from both the male and the female.

It's important to note, that infertility is not as uncommon as you would think therefore you should be accused of it. Instead you should talk to someone about it. About 15% to 20% of couples will experience infertility. Amongst these couples approximately 40% of the cases are due to female infertility with 40% of the cases being due to male infertility. In 10% of the cases the problem was associated with both the male and female and the remaining 10% is unknown.

There are many factors that have to be taken into account when it comes to the cause of infertility. Take a look at your lifestyle first. A few changes could help. Are you taking care of yourself in terms of healthy eating habits and general fitness? A nutritional and healthy lifestyle can contribute greatly to your fertility. Do you smoke or drink alcohol? If you do, you could be drastically lowering your chances of being able to conceive. For women who smokes 20 cigarettes a day her natural fertility lowers by over 20%. For men smoking could lead to low sperm counts as well as low sperm motility. Drinking alcohol also reduces fertility. Alcohol is toxic to sperm because it reduces sperm levels and can disrupt hormone balances. If you've implemented these lifestyle changes and after 12 months of trying to conceive nothing happens, then you should consult a fertility doctor.

A fertility doctor will run a number of tests on both the male and the female to determine where the problem lies. Once it is determined what the problem is, the fertility doctor can recommend a course of treatment. There are a number of options that are available to the relevant candidates which includes IVF, Ovulation Induction, ICSI, IUI, Blastocyst Culture, and In Vitro Maturation, amongst others.

Whatever your story may be or whatever the problem you may be experiencing, it is always worth speaking to someone. It is the only way that you can overcome the problem. Being ashamed will not help you. It's important to be brave and take the step towards a happy future.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Preserves a Woman’s Body Post Menopause

Menopause is a tricky problem for women to negotiate. Hot flushes, mood swings, night sweats, sleeplessness, and vaginal dryness are but some of the issues. It's a very similar position to that of puberty where the body is out of control and one's emotions follow suite. If a woman goes through this time is facing added pressures with family or job she can lose her confidence and sink into a state of depression.

The effect on those around her has a bearing on her moods as they usually fail to understand what is happening to her. In my case the greatest thing was hormone replacement therapy which almost immediately corrected the problems. The brain cleared of its confusion, the other symptoms naturally stopped, and energy levels were restored.

The question many face is how safe is this HRT? Some studies link it to breast cancer and other diseases as a warning against it. But speaking from personal experience the risks of developing is far outweighed by the benefits.

As opposed to my situation my sister, five years younger, did not take HRT and she had a hysterectomy, which saw the female reproductive organs removed. By the time she was 50 she was diagnosed with the bones of an 80-year-old. She then suffered from osteoporosis with her bones, particularly her ribs, breaking with the slightest pressure.

On top of that she also has irritable bowel syndrome and other things, such as shingles. Her blood pressure was always low and other problems emerged. Although active and stoic her health went rapidly downhill and she died two years ago of pancreatic cancer at the age of 71. Now one can not say that HRT would have saved her from that but it certainly did not cause the cancer.

By way of contrast my body is fit, healthy, strong, with no disease or blood pressure at the age now of 78. My brain is active and productive and most days I attend a gym. My bones are also strong with no sign of osteoporosis. I do not even get headaches or other things most people my age would normally suffer from. I do not even wear glasses.

While there are great benefits to be had from HRT it is my belief it also preserves the body well into old age. Cancers of the type they proclaim may be associated with it are, in my opinion, not related to it. Breast cancer is common among women of all ages and some die in their twenties from it.

To be rid of the awful symptoms of menopause is a great achievement by the medical scientists. They have made it possible for many women to remain a productive force in society. My mother who never had the benefits of it suffered and died at the age of 56 years.

While everyone is different and people have diverse opinions about what is good for their heath my suggestion is to go where your body takes you. Do not be scared or put off by claims that are as yet unproven.

A General Understanding About Breast Lumps During Pregnancy

Anything like a bulge, swelling, bump or a lump in any part of one's breast can be considered as a breast lump. Such a protrusion may feel different from the rest of the breast or breast tissues surrounding it. If you are expecting, and you find a lump in any part of your breast, do not panic because in most cases these lumps are non-cancerous.

Breast Lumps during Pregnancy

During pregnancy, various changes take place in your breasts, and this makes them heavier, firmer and lumpier. Especially during your 2nd or 3rd trimester, a lump might be just because of a milk duct that's blocked.

A blocked milk duck can easily be recognized, as it happens to be red, hard and tender, and in some days automatically gets cleared up. These harmless bulges tell you that your body is getting ready to provide nourishment to your baby.

Normally lumps that cause pain are not harmful (cancerous); for example, lumps due to Fibroadenosis. It's a breast disease which involves certain benign conditions. This can cause the breast size to increase. Apart from this, firm and smooth lumps can be caused due to breast cysts (fluid-filled cysts or sacs) in breast tissue.

In youngger women (mostly), hard, round and smooth tissue lumps get developed on the outer side of their milk ducts, these are called Fibroadenomas. These are known to change their position on the breast, so are also called breast meat.Sometimes pus gets accumulated inside one's breast, forms a lump and cause pain; This condition is called Breast Abscesses. The affected breast part becomes swollen and reddish. This is also sometimes accompanied by high fever. Also, conditions like Intraductal Papilloma (looks like a wart; formed in milk-duck), Mastitis (pain in breast tissue with inflammation), Lipoma (fatty lump growth) and Fat Necrosis (irregular solid lump), can lead to benign (non-cancerous) lumps. Therefore, the regular self-examination is a must in the first place, to detect whether one's breast lump is a benign or cancerous one.

After delivery, breastfeeding the newborn is beneficial for both the mother and the baby. In a case of the new mommy, breastfeeding will decrease her breast cancer risk in future.

Cancerous Lumps during Pregnancy

Although, it has been studied that pregnant women are rarely attacked by breast cancer. And if one is below thirty-five years of age, the chances are further reduced. A pregnant woman with breast lumps can get detected with breast cancer.

When a woman is expecting, her body goes through certain hormonal changes; this can accelerate the growth of this disease. Moreover, during pregnancy it's normal for one's breasts to get thickened; This does not let her notice any lump or tumor formed initially.

For this reason, when breast cancer lumps are spotted later, they are much bigger and advanced. So, especially during pregnancy, one must get their breasts examined on a regular basis.

What Is Breast Cancer?

When cell division in any part of the body happens in an uncontrolled manner, a cluster of cells is formed that takes control over the tissues around it, and eventually affects other body parts. This phenomenon is called cancer. In the case of breast cancer a group of such cells, created due to such abnormal cell division, forms a malignant tumor / lump. Till now it has been detected mostly in women; in men it's rare.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Visiting your physician regularly before your child is born will keep both you as well as your child in good health. These prenatal visits need to include your breast exams if you want to be certain about not having breast cancer or for an early detection of the same. Also, your physician or nurse will tell you about performing self-examination in the right way.

Normally doctors go for a mammogram to examine a lump. As the breast's density increases during pregnancy, even mammogram sometimes might fail to detect any danger. So here 3D mammograms can be much more trusted.

If doctors suspect any lump as a threat, the biopsy is done. Ultrasound can also be given for evaluating any disease, plus guiding the biopsy.

The most important question that others women with breast cancer is, “Will my baby be okay?” Any fact, like a mother's breast cancer harming her baby, has not been proved yet. However, there are risks involved in the treatments.

Doctors consider surgery as a safe measure. In the case of an early detected cancer, they ask the patient to go for a removal of the affected part of her breast. And because radiation might be harmful to the baby, radiation therapy is given post pregnancy. In situations where chemotherapy is a must, it's done only after expecting mother's first trimester. This decreases the chances of the baby getting affected.

In the advanced stages, the pregnant patient needs surgery as well as chemotherapy, and this obviously can harm her baby. Here the mother is asked to consult with her doctor and family and decide if she wants to go for the treatment.
